Experimental identification of electric field excitation mechanisms in a structural transition of tokamak plasmas

In this Letter, we report model verifications for a key physics for the L-H transition. Radial electric field excitation, using discharges having a two-step transition. Examining time derivative of Poissons equation, it is found that the sum of the loss cone loss current and neoclassical bulk viscosity current agrees the experimentally observed current in the order of magnitude at the first transition. Following second transition and an ambipolar condition in the L-mode cannot be explained by the models.

Cross-scale interactions between electron and ion scale turbulence in a tokamak plasma

Multiscale gyrokinetic turbulence simulations with the real ion-to-electron mass ratio and $$beta$$ value are realized for the first time, where the $$beta$$ value is given by the ratio of plasma pressure to magnetic pressure and characterizes electromagnetic effects on microinstabilities. Numerical analysis at both the electron scale and the ion scale is used to reveal the mechanism of their cross-scale interactions. Even with the real- mass scale separation, ion-scale turbulence eliminates electron-scale streamers and dominates heat transport, not only of ions but also of electrons. When the ion-scale modes are stabilized by finite-$$beta$$ effects, the contribution of the electron-scale dynamics to the turbulent transport becomes non-negligible and turns out to enhance ion-scale turbulent transport.

Modulation Charge eXchange Recombination Spectroscopy (MCXRS) measurements with high spatial and temporal resolution have made the evaluation of the toroidal plasma flow of fully stripped carbon impurity ions in the JT-60U tokamak peripheral region (including in particular separatrix) possible with a better signal-to-noise ratio. Boundary condition of Vt imposed at the separatrix in ELMy H-mode plasmas has been identified, comparing between co- and counter-NBI discharges. The Vt value at the separatrix is not held fixed at the zero, varying with momentum input direction, but being not strongly affected by the ELM event. A non-zero Vt value at the separatrix might be connected to fast ion losses due to toroidal field ripple that results in formation of a negative radial electric field (Er) layer having almost zero (or very weak positive) Er-shear value at the separatrix. Improved understanding of physics process in pedestal structure formation for the Vt and Er is also discussed.

We develop the method for the stability analysis of a ideal external magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mode by solving the eigenvalue problem associated with the two-dimensional Newcomb equation, the inertia free linear ideal MHD equation. This eigenvalue problem can be expected to provide a powerful tool for not only a low-n external MHD mode but also a high-n mode, where n is a toroidal mode number. With this method, we analyze an effect of the aspect ratio on the stability of middle-n (1$$<$$n$$<$$10) external MHD modes in tokamaks; this gets attention for the design research of a high performance tokamak. As the result of this work, we study that external MHD modes become stable as the aspect ratio decreases, and also find that the stability of middle-n external modes becomes important because an effect of a conducting wall is enhanced by reducing the aspect ratio.

Stability of double tearing mode in current hole configuration

The current density is expected to be negative in the central region of the tokamak when the amplitude of bootstrap current or off-axis current drive is large enough. However, a flat current profile with almost zero value has been observed in experiments even under the situation with negative one-turn voltage exists in the central region of plasma. Double tearing mode (DTM) can be unstable for the current profile with a "current hole" and some MHD activities are observed in JET before the formation of the current hole. On the contrary, no MHD activity is observed in the JT-60 experiment. Here, we study the condition of appearance of DTM and investigate the stability of DTM and the interaction between DTM (n=1 perturbation) and "Current Hole" with resistive RMHD simulations.

Dependence of the ELMy H-mode confinement on the beta has been investigated for a long time, but a common conclusion has not yet been obtained.The IPB98(y,2) scaling shows a strong degradation with beta, while DIII-D and JET experiments exhibited the absence of the beta degradation. Recent JT-60U experiment demonstrated that the strong beta degradation really exists for the ELMy H-mode. In the present paper, we analyze the JT-60U ELMy H-mode confinement database and confirm the strong power degradation of the confinement time, which corresponds to the strong beta degradation consistent with the above result. We analyze also the ITPA H-mode confinement database in detail. How the beta dependence of the confinement time is changed by the externally given parameters, such as the shape parameters, are investigated.

Impact of wall saturation on particle control in long and high-power-heated discharges in JT-60U

In order to understand plasma-wall interactions in a long time scale, the discharge pulse length has been extended from 15 s to 65 s, with the NB-heating duration extended to 30 s. Nearly-saturation of the divertor plates was observed in the latter half of long pulse ELMy H-mode discharges. Particle sink into the divertor plates gradually decreased, and subsequently, wall-pumping efficiency became zero. This wall saturation resulted in a rise of the main plasma density without any auxiliary particle supply besides NB with divertor-pumping. Even when the total injected energy reached up to $$sim$$ 350 MJ in a discharge, neither sudden increase of carbon generation such as carbon bloom nor increase of the dilution of the main plasma was observed.

Effects of plasma rotation and ripple loss on the Type-I ELMs have systematically studied in the JT-60U tokamak, scanning combinations of NBI at the three kinds of plasma volumes. New findings on the Type-I ELMs confirm to be smaller ELM energy loss per pedestal stored energy, DWELM/Wped, and faster ELM frequency, fELM, in the counter-NBI than co-NBI, keeping the power of ELM, PELM, per heating power crossing the separatrix, PSEP, constant. Balanced-NBI case is also intermediate between co- and counter-NBI. In addition, the product of PELM/PSEP decreases according to increase in the plasma volume, suggesting an increase in the inter-ELM transport due mainly to an enhancement in the ripple loss of fast ion.

The potential and density fluctuations of Geodesic-Acoustic-Mode (GAM) were investigated through the direct and simultaneous measurement of electrostatic and density fluctuations with a heavy ion beam probe(HIBP). It was found that the amplitude of the fluctuation has a maximum inside of the plasma boundary and that it has an almost constant frequency. It was also found that the mode propagates in the radial direction and that the GAM affects the background turbulence. The influence to the background turbulence was found to be in consistent with a theoretical prediction.

Accompanying the HRS H-mode transition, the coherent magnetic fluctuations in the frequency range of the order of 10-100 kHz with significant variation are seen on the magnetic probes at the vessel wall. Above all, two types of edge MHD activities, which have associated toroidal mode number of n=1 and n$$sim$$7, respectively, seem to be more important for the HRS H-mode plasmas. To investigate their interaction, bi-spectral analysis is applied for the magnetic probe data. It is found to be a powerful tool, exhibiting the phase-coupled oscillations between two types of edge MHD activities having n=1 and n$$sim$$7.

Japanese activities in ITER transitional arrangements

The ITER Transitional Arrangements (ITA) are conducted by the International Team with supports from participant teams (PTs). The Japanese PT (JA-PT) set up in JAERI has contributed to ITA by sharing a lot of technical tasks to verify feasibilities of fabrication and quality control method in procuring ITER equipments and facilities. For examples, trial fabrications of Nb3Sn strands have been performed by JA-PT with four potential suppliers, and one of the strand which meet the ITER requirements in all key parameters have already been chosen for one of the suppliers. All strands including the other suppliers strands will be fully qualified by the end of 2005. The trial fabrications of CS jackets and material for TF coil structure are also in progress at industrial level. Fabrication of the partial mock-ups of the vacuum vessel is also ongoing. Furthermore, JA-PT has made several technical developments on NB and EC systems to improve reliability of long pulse operations. Completing these technical preparations will make it possible to finalize the specification of ITER procurements.

This paper presents dependence of the stress intensity factor, around the defect in the butt joint welding of a superconducting conductor conduit, on a geometrical factor estimated by fracture mechanics analysis. The stress intensity factor can be estimated by the Newman-Raju equation about CICC section, but the effect of the difference between the geometry assumed in the equation and CICC has not been clarified yet. Therefore, the three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM) is performed to estimate the geometrical factor. As a result, the Newman-Raju equation is considered to be available for the assessment of the fracture toughness of the conduit of rectangular shape because the maximum stress intensity factor by 3-D FEM is only 3% larger than that by the Newman-Raju equation in the maximum postulated defect.

An attractive operational regime without any large ELMs, namely High Recycling Steady (HRS) H-mode, was found on JFT-2M during Y2000 campaign after boronization. Recent experiments have concentrated on the studies of the access conditions for the HRS regime, in terms of the pedestal parameters. The HRS regime was more likely at higher edge density and lower edge temperature, which corresponds to the normalized electron collisionality of 1 in the plasma edge region.

It is shown that critical beta is decreased by ferromagnetic effect by about 8% for $$mu$$/$$mu$$$$_{0}$$$$sim$$2, $$mu$$ and $$mu$$$$_{0}$$ denoting the permeability of ferromagnetic wall and vacuum, respectively, for tokamak of aspect ratio 3. The existence of the stability window for resistive wall mode opened by both effects of the toroidal plasma rotation and the plasma dissipation, which was not observed for high aspect ratio tokamak, is found for tokamak of aspect ratio 3. The effect of ferromagnetism on them is also investigated. The critical beta analyses of NCT (National Centralized Tokamak) plasma using VALEN code are started with stabilizing plate and vacuum vessel geometry with finite resistivity, and the results for passive effect of stabilizing plate are obtained. The calculations including stabilizing effect of the vacuum-vessel and also active feedback control are also performed for present design of NCT plasma.
